MEET
ANGELA STRANGE

Helping artists understand, organize, and take control of the business behind their music.

Decades in the Music Business

I’ve worked behind the scenes of the music industry in management, public relations, marketing, A&R, education, and music business mentoring. Those experiences gave me a practical understanding of what artists need, not only to release and promote music, but to build careers they can organize, protect, and control.

Over time, I realized there was no shortage of people offering promotion, marketing, management, and other services. What was missing was someone helping artists understand how the entire business worked, organize what was happening behind the scenes, and prepare themselves to make informed decisions. Without that foundation, even great marketing, strong management, and valuable professional relationships could only take an artist so far.

Throughout my career, I’ve helped hundreds of music professionals, including new and established artists, signed and independent artists, songwriters, producers, managers, artist teams, and record labels. Some came to me while preparing their first release. Others had already built extensive catalogs and successful careers but needed clarity, stronger foundations, or better systems behind the scenes.

Music Business 101 Mentor is not a public relations, marketing, or day-to-day management service. My role is to help artists understand the business, put the right pieces in place, organize their music and career information, and make informed decisions with confidence.

Whether an artist already has a manager, label, attorney, publicist, or an entire professional team, my work can support what those professionals are doing by helping the artist stay informed, organized, and actively involved in their own career.

For artists handling everything independently, I teach the essential business foundations and help them create a practical system for managing the moving pieces.

My goal is not simply to help someone through the next release, but to give them knowledge and systems they can rely on throughout their career.

Angela Strange, founder of Music Business 101 Mentor.

Why I Created Music Business 101 Mentor

When I first entered the music industry, my work centered on promoting and marketing artists, shows, and events to gain visibility. But as I watched artists become known, especially in my hometown, Memphis, I noticed something troubling: their recognition was growing, but the money was often passing around them instead of reaching them.

Their businesses were not properly established. They were signing agreements they did not fully understand, missing opportunities to earn from their work, and watching other people profit from music they had created. The responsibility to learn the business ultimately rested with the artist, yet very few people were teaching it in a practical way they could understand and apply.

I continue to see the same problem among artists with managers, labels, distributors, attorneys, and extensive professional teams. Each person may handle an important part of the career, but the artist often cannot see how those pieces connect. When a deal or professional relationship ends, they may not know what music has been released, what has been registered, who owns what, which obligations remain, or when their rights return.

I created Music Business 101 Mentor to help change that. At any stage of a career, artists can learn how the pieces work together and build an organized system for their music, rights, agreements, registrations, and important decisions.

I believe the artist must remain the conductor of their career. Staying in control does not mean remaining independent forever or doing everything alone. It means understanding what others are handling, knowing whether those relationships are working in your best interest, and having the knowledge and records needed to keep moving when circumstances change.

What I Believe Every Artist Deserves

Every artist deserves a fair opportunity to benefit from the work they create. That begins with understanding the business, making informed decisions, and recognizing that the artist must remain at the center of the career.

GET PAID FOR THEIR ART

Artists deserve to earn from their work and understand the different ways their music can generate income. Recognition should not enrich everyone except the person who created the art.

KNOWLEDGE BEFORE DECISIONS

Before signing an agreement or accepting an opportunity, artists deserve to understand what they are deciding, what they may be giving up, and how that decision could affect their future.

CLARITY ACROSS EVERY MOVING PIECE

Artists do not have to perform every task themselves, but they should understand how ownership, rights, royalties, registrations, distribution, agreements, and professional relationships work together.

AUTHORITY OVER THEIR CAREER

The artist is ultimately the leader of the career. Every manager, attorney, label, distributor, and other professional relationship should support the artist’s long-term interests—not replace the artist’s knowledge, voice,

or control.

These beliefs are reflected throughout the Music Business 101 Framework, helping artists understand, build, organize, and grow with greater clarity and control.
